Sharing and archiving mail

When incoming and outgoing email first hits the Mail Server, mail is checked in the Contact Directory to see if any address field contains a business contact. If it is, then the email is committed to the MRX database, Additionally (and optionally), mail is filed into folders on the MRX mailserver that can be viewed from within any (IMAP) mail client software.

From a user’s point of view, mail just behaves like normal. Email to and from clients is stored in the database, but email from your mum isn’t.

If you wish to access archived mail, you can do this in one of two ways:

1. Using a web or native client application provides an extremely fast way of retrieving and searching for mail by company, contact or email. Note that the web client will enable you to do this even from an Internet café, where you have no access to your own workstation. In a recent MRX test, searching the body of each of 80,000 emails for a random word ("blair") took less than 5 seconds. The "test" database server hardware cost less than £400 and comprised a 1.6 Ghz Core Duo Intel processor with 80GB serial ATA disc holding the database file.

2. MRX will also archive mail into IMAP company folders, so, using your normal mail client, you will be able to locate archived mail without leaving the client.

The secondary IMAP archive provides the additional benefit of being the repository for mail attachments. These are stored in-tact for instant download without using up space in the database.
